Fireplace Maintenance Tips for Fall

Chilly weather is here and that means you're reaching to turn on your fireplace! Is it at its peak performance to keep you warm and cozy this season? Gas Fireplaces need an annual inspection to stay up to snuff. Since gas fireplaces are easy to take care of and low maintenance, you may assume that it doesn't need cleaning. Like a car or appliance, maintenance is the best policy and your gas fireplace needs a qualified technician to clean and service the inner components and check for any safety concerns. Here's a few tips for what you need to know about servicing your home fireplace!

1. Debris is Public Enemy #1

Debris can be in the vents, the flue and inside the chimney. Those spriderwebs can restrict airflow which can lead to a bad smell. Common debris includes deteriorating logs, chipped or scratched glass, residue build up from last season's burn, pet hair, dust, insects and other foreign materials.

2. It's Not Your Eyes, It's the Glass

If you have a glass panel in front of your fireplace you need to clean it once a year. It'll not only distort the view of your beautiful fire but routinely removing any residue build up in your fire will keep it lasting year after year. Use a cleaner that is specifically manufactured for fireplaces, otherwise a water-and-vinegar mix is a good subsitute.

WARNING: Do not use any cleaner that contains ammonia.

3. Light the Way

The pilot light. What is it, where is it and will it explode? Rest assured, it will not. Some pilot lights go out on their own or you've turned it off to avoid sulfur buildup on the inside of your fireplace. Regardless, it is best to have a professional inspect and clean it so that there are no clogs or issues with the Oxygen Depletion Sensor which could cause your fireplace to malfunction.

4. So What Happens During an Inspection?

During an inspection, the technician will first take a look at the exterior. This includes making sure glass is not chipped, cracked, or dirty, and that the framework is holding up sufficiently. While checking for dents or debris, the technician will also look at the interior gas ignition under the log structure and make sure it is lighting flawlessly. They also make sure your log set is not deteriorating in any way. Often times, the face of the unit will to be taken off, so they can inspect the valves and connections underneath your fireplace or insert. They will make sure your fireplace’s heat output is correct, and clean up any residue that has started to block any ports or vents.

After a routine check, your technician should make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors, and that you are aware of any repairs your gas fireplace may need. Our certified gas technicians have a wealth of information and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about your fireplace or insert, don’t be afraid to ask.

Safety is always number one when it comes to enjoying a roaring fire in your living space. By having an annual inspection, you ensure that your beautiful fireplace is running at peak efficiency for whenever you need that glowing comfort or extra heat.
